🌏Article
We've learned a lot about the dangers of smoking since studies in the early 20th century first suggested that cigarettes might cause cancer.
But while the percentage of people who smoke has been decreasing for many years, it may surprise you to learn that a study in The Lancet has found that more people are smoking today than did 30 years ago.
Researchers looked at smoking in 204 countries between 1990 and 2019. They found that smoking among males aged 15 and older decreased almost 28% since 1990, and among females it decreased almost 38%.
However, the world's population also grew during that time, meaning the number of people who smoke has actually increased: from 0.99 billion in 1990 to 1.1 billion in 2019.
The study also found that 7.7 million deaths were caused by smoking in 2019. Among these, 6.7 million people still smoked at the time they died.
The researchers say it is important for all countries to create stronger anti-smoking policies to reduce deaths, economic costs, and impacts on health systems.
