A Nashville helicopter pilot has rescued over a dozen people from flooding after emergency services were unable to get to the area.
Joel Boyers had just finished helping his fiancée get her pilot's license, and the couple were on their way home to celebrate, when he received a call asking for help. It was from a woman who said her brother was trapped with his daughters on the roof of his home in the town of Waverly, Tennessee, due to flooding.
“I thought, 'How would I feel if I told her I'm not even going to try?” said Boyers.
The weather was terrible, but Boyers and his fiancée, Melody Among, flew to Waverly anyway.
When he got there, he said the streets had been replaced by torrents, and he knew nobody would be able to swim in the floodwaters. A few people were out in boats rescuing people, but Boyers and Among were alone in the sky.
He started flying up and down the town, picking up anyone he could. He had to fly around power lines, balance on roofs and use all the skills he had learned during his 16 years as a pilot.
When he left Waverly, the state police and National Guard still had not flown in because of the bad weather. But Boyers, who co-owns Helistar Aviation, said he and Among ended up rescuing 17 people. The flooding, which was caused by record-breaking rainfall, killed 20 people. More than 270 homes were destroyed and 160 were damaged, according to the Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency.
