Topic: Fort San Domingo (紅毛城)
Fort San Domingo has been known for its enriched historical background.
It was first built in 1628 by the Spanish when they occupied the north of Taiwan. It was destroyed
by the Spanish themselves in 1642 when they lost the war to the Dutch. In 1744, the Dutch rebuilt
the fort using stone and renamed it Fort Antonio. Over the years the fort is still much the same as
it was.
In 1868, the British took the fort as their trade consulate for the region. They built a residence
next to the fort, which then became the official residence of the ambassador to Taiwan. The
consulate closed during the Second World War, and the Japanese occupied it. It reopened after
the war and remained the consulate until 1972. The property was not handed over to the
Taiwanese government until 1980. It is now designated as a historical monument.
