Lebanon's Hezbollah said on Wednesday it was time for politicians to put aside their demands and allow the formation of a new government that can rescue the country from an unprecedented financial crisis.
"Everyone must know the country has run out of time," Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iran-backed movement, said in a televised speech. He said there were "serious, collective efforts" in recent days to ease a political standoff that has obstructed cabinet talks for months.

Lebanon is hurtling towards collapse in a financial meltdown that is posing the most serious threat to its stability since the 1975-1990 civil war, but bickering politicians have been unable to form a government for months.
Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri and President Michel Aoun have been at loggerheads since October, dashing hopes of a reversal of Lebanon's deepening financial meltdown.
Hariri has said Aoun is trying to dictate cabinet seats in order to gain veto power while Aoun's party accused Hariri of trying to orchestrate a majority for himself and his allies.
Hezbollah, an ally of Aoun, has urged cabinet formation before.
A new cabinet could implement reforms and unlock much needed foreign aid.

The UN is starving Syria and the US is calling them out - analysis

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called on the UN Security Council to reauthorize the opening of three border crossings for humanitarian assistance to Syria.
He said the UN had allowed two of them to close, “unconscionably.”

The real story here is that several authoritarian regimes that back the Syrian government don’t want aid flowing into areas where the US has influence in eastern Syria, and also don’t want aid going through Turkey to Turkish-occupied northern Syria.
In essence the UN has been used as a tool to prop up the Syrian regime. This is in line with the general way the UN is exploited, and also is in line with the problematic nature of international law, which tends to view “states” as sacrosanct, not wanting to deal with “substate entities” or autonomous regions.
This means that when states break down or have a civil war, areas that may have long ago broken away from a central government have difficulty accessing international markets. Whether it is eastern Syria or Somaliland, this may be the case.
However, in other cases the UN is flexible and helps prop up substate entities such as its large infrastructure in Gaza and the West Bank. This may depend on history or the whims of the powerful countries on the Security Council.
The issue in Syria, as in other conflicts historically, is that the US and others are divided. Russia supports the Syrian regime. The US has opposed the regime, and, through fighting ISIS, the US became influential in eastern Syria, where it backs the Syrian Democratic Forces.

However, the US has its own Janus-faced problem with those it supports. Its former Syrian envoy James Jeffrey told the SDF in 2018 that it would have to seek a solution within Syria, and that the US doesn’t work with substate groups. The US relationships in eastern Syria were temporary and transactional, in the view of Jeffrey. The Biden administration is still searching for a Syria policy.
What has changed is that crossings to Syria through Bab al-Salam on the Syria-Turkey border and Yarubiyah between Syria and Iraq were closed by the UN. In effect, this has resulted in the empowerment of the Assad regime, while weakening opposition-controlled areas.
“Security Council members should stop taking part in, or making excuses for, attacks that close these pathways, and they should stop targeting humanitarian workers and Syrian civilians,” Blinken added, saying humanitarian assistance should not be politicized, according to reports.
“Ten years since the grassroots uprising against the Assad regime, that crisis is more dire than ever…. An estimated 13.4 million people, two in every three Syrians, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance,” he said.
This means that over 60% of Syrians are at risk of hunger.
A further discriminatory aspect of the UN regime is the unfair distribution of vaccines through the UN COVAX system. Even though we are told that pandemics don’t recognize international borders, when it comes to UN-run programs, borders matter a lot. And so do vaccines. Almost 1 million AstraZeneca vaccines have been set aside for Syria, according to reports. Only 90,000 will be provided to eastern Syria, and some 224,000 to Turkish-occupied areas.
Will the vaccines be given out equitably? Will Turkish-occupied areas provide them to minorities and women, who face discrimination and are often barred from public life by Turkish-backed extremists?
Many questions remain about these issues as well as the provision of vaccines to other conflict areas, such as Yemen or Libya.
While the international community and UN often talk about minority rights, women’s rights, and other progressive issues, when it comes to actually supporting the rights of refugees and minorities, it is not clear whether the UN actually fulfills many of the values it claims to support. On Syria, this appears to be particularly true.

Saudi press accuses US of supporting terrorism, abusing human rights

After the US State Department released a detailed report on what it believe to be a long list of human rights abuses in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi press, which is completely state-run, has pushed back, claiming that the US itself is one of the most egregious human rights abusers in the world.
Tensions between Riyadh and Washington were already prevalent after the US released its intelligence report on the killing of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The report stated that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) had probably given the order to "capture or kill" the Saudi dissident journalist in the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul in late 2018.

The Saudi press, in turn, has been accusing the US of "supporting terror, committing crimes against humanity and violating human rights," according to the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).
MEMRI cites cases where the Saudi press is claiming the current US administration is attempting to help hostile countries such as Iran, Qatar and Turkey, while vilifying Saudi Arabia as a human rights abuser in the process.
The Saudi press alleges that the current US administration is achieving this by supporting "'terrorist' Islamist Saudi oppositionists" by removing the terrorist designation placed on the Iranian-backed Houthis, in addition to interfering within Saudi Arabian internal affairs within the pretext of championing of human rights, the report said.
By ignoring the human rights abuses in places like Iran - with whom the US is trying to renegotiate a nuclear deal with - the Saudi press believes the US criticism placed on alleged human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia is "hypocritical."
"Aren't [the Americans] the ones who are turning a blind eye to Iran's [custom of] hanging activists and journalists from lamp posts?" MEMRI quoted columnist Muhammad al-Sa'ed Lambastes saying in an article called "Ayatollah Biden."

"Do they remember… that Turkish oppositionists are abducted in [various] world capitals and [then] united with their families in Erdogan's prisons?" the journalist added.
The columnist notes that the "existential propaganda campaign against Saudi Arabia," is an attempt to get the kingdom to "embrace the terrorist agendas" and ideologies of organizations the US is currently in de-escalation talks with.
The columnist noted that within these undertones, Saudis believe that the US is aiding countries like Qatar, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan, and that the US intends to "deliver [Saudi Arabia]" to these newfound "allies," he added.
"Do you believe, oh Saudis, that those who sent your children to Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and Bosnia to fight in civil wars there are now freedom fighters?" Sa'ed said, according to MEMRI. "We know them better than you, you hypocrite Westerners.
"You spared the old serpents, so you will [have to] live with their offspring. So let us say, 'thank you, [but] you will not deceive us,'" he concluded.
Other Saudi journalists, such as Hamoud Abu Talib, claims that the US does all they do to defend international law but at the same time "blatantly violates it," MEMRI reported.
"Several US political administrations in the third millennium have adopted this primitive pattern of thought casts a dark shadow on the ideological, scientific, and independent cultural elite of US society," Talib wrote in a recent analysis.
"A country whose prestigious universities teach international law is blatantly violating this law and all laws, charters, and agreements [accepted] in international relations," he added in contention, according to MEMRI. "At the same time, its senior officials talk about their intent to interfere in the sovereignty, laws, and legislative [processes] of other countries, in the service of evil, blatant, and loathsome agendas."
"The world no longer consists of the ranges, mountains, and deserts where the cowboy could roam on his horse, drawing his gun and trampling anyone who stood in his path or opposed him," Talib mocked.
Saudi journalists are accusing the US of "political Alzheimer's” and claims the US attempts to band-aid fix problems and make concessions with terrorist organizations to bring about peace in conflicted areas, overstepping its boundaries to a certain extent.
While under former president Donald Trump relations with Saudi Arabia seemed to be at an all-time high, if the press statements in Saudi Arabia have any indication as to the kingdom's true feelings of the Biden administration and current US politics, it would seem the two are now in a stand-off.

Biden administration is quietly ramping up aid to Palestinians
$100 million has already been allocated, with little of it publicized, as Washington reverses the Trump policies that saw nearly all funding cut off

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is quietly ramping up assistance to the Palestinians after former US president Donald Trump cut off nearly all aid.
Since taking office with a pledge to reverse many of Trump’s Israeli-Palestinian decisions, the administration has allocated nearly $100 million for the Palestinians, only a small portion of which has been publicized.
The administration announced last Thursday that it was giving $15 million to vulnerable Palestinian communities in the West Bank and Gaza to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. A day later, with no public announcement, it notified Congress that it will give the Palestinians $75 million for economic support, to be used in part to regain their “trust and goodwill” after the Trump-era cuts.

The State Department declined to comment on the notification, and it wasn’t clear if the $75 million includes the $15 million in pandemic aid. Nevertheless, the funding plan represents a major shift in the US approach to the Palestinians after the mutual recriminations during the Trump years.
The administration has made no secret of its belief that Trump’s approach, which alienated the Palestinians, was flawed and made prospects for peace less likely. The new assistance appears aimed at encouraging the Palestinians to return to negotiations with Israel, though there is no indication it will have that effect and Israel’s response has yet to be gauged.
A copy of the March 26 congressional notification from the State Department and US Agency for International Development was obtained by The Associated Press, just hours after the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office issued a report that found USAID had not properly vetted all of its Palestinian funding recipients for US antiterrorism criteria as required by law.
Under US law, the United States may not provide aid to the Palestinian Authority or fund projects it would benefit from as long as the authority pays stipends to the perpetrators and families of those convicted of anti-Israel or US attacks. Such payments were one reason the Trump administration cut off aid. Although none of the assistance is to be provided to the Palestinian Authority, pro-Israel lawmakers, many of them Republicans, are likely to raise objections.

The GAO based its findings on a review of aid provided to the Palestinians between 2015 and 2019, when Trump severed most of the aid. While it said that USAID had followed the law with respect to people and groups it funded directly, it had not done the same with entities, known as sub-grantees, to which those groups then distributed taxpayer dollars.
“If funding resumes, we recommend measures to improve compliance,” said the GAO report, which was released late Monday.
According to USAID’s congressional notification, funding has either resumed already or will shortly as much of the $75 million is intended for urgent short-term projects aimed at quickly rebuilding US-Palestinian relations, which had sunk to lows during the Trump administration. The notice said the money may start to be spent on April 10.
“Given the absence of USAID activity in recent years, engaging civil society actors will be critical to regaining trust and goodwill with Palestinian society,” the notification said, explaining the rationale for providing $5.4 million to Palestinian civic groups, including possibly independent media, in the West Bank and Gaza.
Other areas identified for USAID funding include the health care sector and the resumption of assistance to the East Jerusalem Hospital Network that Trump had cut off, sanitation, water supply and transportation infrastructure, social services and job training for Palestinian youth, micro-loans and grants for small businesses as well as disaster preparedness.
In a bid to forestall expected questions and criticism from lawmakers who supported Trump’s aid cuts, USAID sought to assure Congress that it would ensure all legal criteria for providing the money would be met.
“USAID adheres to rigorous partner antiterrorism vetting and certification, auditing, and monitoring procedures to help ensure that its assistance does not go to Hamas or other terrorist organizations,” the notice said.

In announcing the $15 million in COVID-19 assistance, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said it was “one piece of our renewed commitment to the Palestinian people,” but she did not elaborate.
Under Trump, the US provided unprecedented support to Israel, recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv and breaking relations and slashing financial assistance for the Palestinians.
Soon after US President Joe Biden was inaugurated on January 20, his administration announced that it would restore relations with the Palestinians and renew aid as key elements of support for a two-state solution to the conflict.
Thomas-Greenfield reiterated Biden’s support for a two-state solution and said “the United States looks forward to continuing its work with Israel, the Palestinians and the international community to achieve a long-sought peace in the Middle East.”

State Dept. confirms US views Israel’s control over West Bank as ‘occupation’
Washington clarifies position after report on human rights situation restores the expression, excised under Trump, but also uses some of previous administration’s terminology

WASHINGTON — US President Joe Biden’s administration said Wednesday that Israel’s control of the West Bank is indeed “occupation,” clarifying its stance after the release of a report that seemed to downplay the term, adopting language used by Donald Trump’s government.
The State Department’s annual report on human rights “does use the term ‘occupation’ in the context of the current status of the West Bank,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.
“This has been the longstanding position of previous administrations of both parties over the course of many decades,” he said.

But under the staunchly pro-Israel Trump, the annual human rights report renamed the section on “Israel and the Occupied Territories” as “Israel, West Bank and Gaza.”

The first of the reports issued under Biden, which was released Tuesday, kept the same formulation but stated that the language was not meant to convey any position.
The top State Department official on human rights, Lisa Peterson, said that the report generally uses geographical names and that “Israel, West Bank and Gaza” was easier and clearer for readers.
Trump’s secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, broke past precedent by visiting a Jewish settlement in the West Bank and said he disagreed with the broad international consensus that such construction is illegal, with Trump signaling that Israel should be free to annex swathes of the West Bank. Trump also recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as well as Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights.
Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005 but maintains control over the Hamas-ruled territory’s airspace and borders, saying it must do so to prevent the terror group, which is avowed to Israel’s destruction, from arming itself and perpetrating attacks.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has indicated the United States will not reverse Trump’s decisions on Jerusalem but will also do more to work toward an independent Palestinian state.
