Brixton Academy is to reopen for the first time since a stampede which left two people dead in December 2022.

The south London venue's license was suspended after a concert by Afro-pop singer Asake, when large numbers of people attempted to enter the hall.

Gaby Hutchinson, 23, and Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, were killed. Another woman is still hospitalized.

The Metropolitan Police say they are "focused on establishing exactly what happened on this tragic evening".

The first artists in the reopened venue will be Nirvana UK, a Nirvana tribute band, and The Smyths, who perform tracks by The Smiths.

Lambeth Council suspended the Brixton O2 Academy license on December 22, 2022, a week after the crush.

George Fleming, founder of Save Our Scene, a campaign which supports the music industry, said: “Clearly what happened was completely tragic and there is no denying that it can never happen again.

“But losing this venue would not only have been a huge blow to the local economy as well as the community, but also to the UK live music sector, which is currently being hit hard.”

The victims' families had earlier paid tribute to Ms Ikumelo, a nursing graduate, from Newham in east London, and Ms Hutchinson, a security dog handler, from Gravesend in Kent.
