大家好，歡迎大家來收聽English Angel 在師大! 我是Angela老師，這一季我們一起來學習容易混淆的英文相關單詞與用語，這樣你就可以深入瞭解一些常混淆不清楚的字詞，並掌握正確用法，也能進一步釐清自己的英文觀念。
今天我們和大家一起來看看literally 和figuratively這兩個字要怎麼用？有同學（Lee）上課的時候問我說，我在看電視劇時都會聽到母語人士(native speakers) 講literally或是figuratively，他們究竟要怎麼用？意思是什麼呢？我到底要怎麼樣聽懂他們在講什麼？好，Lee同學有這個疑問，我們來看看這兩個字究竟是為什麼會常常出現，母語人士覺得literally遭到濫用overused的狀況很多，我們來看看這些字用的情境，該不該用，要怎麼用？
(一) literally (adv.) 照字面地；正確地；實在地; 確實地；真正地
我們先來看literally這個字，這個字其實現在有常用的三種意思，第一種意思，是字面的意思; 第二種是真的意思，用於強調的時候; 第三種是很誇張的用法，並非真正的事實。有一派人士覺得第一種意思才是對的。但是因為第二種和第三種太多人用，而且十九世紀就有人開始這樣用，所以這種非正式很口語的用法，很多人都這樣用。請大家看以下說明。
(A) literally (adv.) 按照字面地; 確實地; 正確地
這個字原本的意思是就是按照字面的意思(according to the actual words)，也就是真實的意思(real meaning)。請看以下的例句，讓你更能瞭解literally的用法和意思。
例句1. Aloha, literally means love, peace and compassion. 阿囉哈真正字意上的意思是愛、和平和同情。
其實也可以這樣說：The true meaning of Aloha is love, peace and compassion.
例句2. That book is literally just pictures of cute animals. 那本書確實就只是可愛的動物圖片。
例句3. Geography (geo + graphy) literally means "to write about the Earth." 地理實際上就是寫有關於地球的事。
(B) literally (adv.) 確實地; 真正地 (用於強調和用在驚訝的時候，但是沒有誇張的意思)。
例句1. Depression can quite literally hurt. 憂鬱症的確是會非常的痛。
例句2. A whale shark is quite literally a massive shark! 鯨鯊事實上是一條巨大的鯊魚。
例句3. There are literally hundreds of thousands of asteroids out there. 事實上哪裡有數十萬顆隕石。
(C) literally (adv.) 實在地; 真正地 （不是真的，也是強調，但是是很誇張的用法）
例句1. My head is literally going to explode. 我的頭真的要爆炸了。
例句2. The basketball player is literally as tall as a tree.  這個籃球選手真的像樹一樣高。
例句3. We literally died laughing. 我們差點笑死掉。
 (二) figuratively (adv.) 真正地 （象徵性意思; 比喻的意思）
這個字figuratively 是用來強調，感覺這個東西是真的，我們會用figuratively。用figuratively是一種想像，一種比喻的方式，和原本的意思已經不相同了。
例句1. I’ve hit the wall figuratively. 我已經撞牆遇到瓶頸了。
例句2. Figuratively speaking, we are still in the same boat. 打個比方來說，我們現在仍在一條船上。
例句3. He has worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively.
實際上與比喻上，他已經身兼多職數年。
理論上，我們用figuratively表示打比方或譬喻，而用literally來表示字面上的意思。但是由於語言在變化，大家的使用也不再循規蹈矩，所以新的用法或是亂用與誤用也儼然成為正宗，所以下一次只要你聽聽別人講話時，你應該可以猜出這些字所代表的意思。

1. Aloha, literally means love, peace and compassion. 阿囉哈真正字意上的意思是愛、和平和同情。
就等於The true meaning of Aloha is love, peace and compassion.
