no frail lily sublime,
for in war's famine-time
thou'lt need but corn for bread.

Hoard no jewel (he cried)
no dazzling laboured gem:
thou'lt be forced to sell them
for steel, so now decide.

Set no flower in thy word
 (he besought, but none heard)
cut no flash to thy wit,
 if thou must disown it
when seest thou sorrow's sword.
