Years ago, I knew an elder with a highly esteemed position in the Republic of China.
多年前，我認識一位在中華民國地位非常崇高的長輩。

He told me about the meaning of "integrity" in Chinese, which is often translated as "誠信" in English.
他告訴我，關於中文的「誠信」的意思，在英文常被翻譯成「integrity」。

He said that "誠" is composed of "word" and "done", meaning that what one says can come true.
他說，「誠」是由「言」和「成」組成，意思是說出來的話，事情就會成就。

And "信" is composed of "people" and "word", meaning that the words spoken from a person's mouth.
而「信」是由「人」和「言」組成，意思是，從人嘴巴所說出來的話。

The meaning of "誠信" is to do what one says they will do.
「誠信」的意思是：是人，就要說到做到。

This reminds me of how God also created light just by saying it should be there.
這讓我想起了上帝也是這樣，說要有光，就有了光。

So, I consider this elder's admonition as one of my life principles.
所以我把這位長輩的告誡當作人生原則之一。
