According to South Korea’s BusinessKorea report, technology giants including Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook have all begun to develop their own chips, which represents the further growth of the global foundry business, which is beneficial to foundries, especially TSMC.

Apple’s fifth-generation tablet brain iPad Pro, released in July, is equipped with a self-developed M1 chip. In fact, Apple has become a chip design company, installing its own chips on iPhones, Macintosh computers and iPads.

In addition to Apple, Amazon is currently developing chips for its own network through Israel's Annapurna Lab, which was acquired in 2015. Google is developing chips for its own mobile application processor. Facebook is developing chips for virtual reality (VR) devices.

A person in the semiconductor industry said that companies like Apple believe that using self-developed chips to optimize the performance of products such as iPhone and iPad will be more technically and commercially beneficial than using general-purpose chips.

Therefore, semiconductor manufacturers are seeking new opportunities in the field of foundry. For example, Intel announced that it will invest 20 billion US dollars to set up a fab, hoping to reinvest in this field.

Another industry analyst pointed out that even if the US technology giants self-developed chips, the production work will be handed over to the foundry, the semiconductor industry will be further reorganized into two major departments, design and production, and the foundry market will continue to grow.

This also means that the performance of TSMC and Samsung Electronics foundry manufacturers continues to be optimistic, especially TSMC. According to statistics from TrendForce, TSMC’s market share in the global foundry market increased to 55% in the first quarter of this year, while Samsung Electronics fell to 17%, and UMC ranked third with 7%.
