Our speaker today is Xiaowei who brings to our discussion an insightful view of what national defense is and why it matters. Intuitively, people can appreciate the importance of military defense especially in the case of Taiwan. But do the Taiwanese people have the appropriate expectations of what it can or cannot do?

Generally speaking, Xiaowei points out, the military cannot succeed without the backing of the political will. Vietnam and Afghanistan come to mind. So Xiaowei also talks about how Taiwan can bridge the “military-civilian” gap and how the military can overcome some existing military stereotypes. She points to Finland and Switzerland as having good models to learn from.
