Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic)” by Thomas Eakins is an
oil-on-canvas portrait on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The
painting portrays Dr. Samuel D. Gross, one of the most famous surgeons in the
world at the time, leading a clinic for medical students while operating on a
patient. Eakins completed the painting in 1875 for the 1876 Centennial
Exposition in Philadelphia, but was rejected by the Fine Arts Gallery jury,
evidently because it was considered too frightening. Discover how it came to be
