Today we’re off with another episode of must-go places in Taiwan. If you're looking for a place that is rich in culture, natural beauty, and adventure, then eastern Taiwan is the perfect destination for you.
Eastern Taiwan is a popular destination for travelers, there are two counties in the east, Hualien and Taitung. You can get there by car, by bus, or by train. If you depart from Taipei, you’ll arrive in Hualien first.
吉安is a town in the north of Hualien. Back in the Japanese occupied era, most of the immigrants there were from Yoshinogawa in Mandarin, 吉野川, so they called the town 吉野. And after WW2, the government of Republic of China, Taiwan, changed the name to 吉安.
Ji’an Shrine is a popular historic site for tourists to visit nowadays. It was built in 1917, and was a sacred place for the Japanese immigrants who came here to find peace and to cure their homesick.
Heading a little down south, you will find yourself in a town of a beautiful lake. 壽豐 is famous for 鯉魚潭, Carp Lake. This beautiful lake is surrounded with mountains. Many people would rent paddle boats or canoes to cruise around. You can also rent bikes to ride around the lake. As for the name of the town 壽豐, is actually a combination of two names of two japanese-built villages, 「壽」村and「豐田」村.
Next, there’s 玉里township, famous for its delicious 玉里noodles. I always crave for 玉里noodles when I visit Hualien. This cuisine may seem just like any other kind of Taiwanese noodles you see in the nightmarkets or local noodle shops. But! Let me tell you, 玉里noodles have their own kind of magic. You can order noodles stirred with sauce, or served in broth. The broth is made from pork bones and dried shrimp. It is typically seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, and other herbs and spices, and often includes ingredients such as sliced pork, bamboo shoots, scallions, and mushrooms.
Travel south and we will arrive in Taitung. Taitung is known for its breathtaking natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and delicious local cuisine.
Firstly, we have 三仙台, which means "Three Immortals Terrace" in Chinese. According to legend, three immortal beings once visited this place and left their footprints on the rocks, which can still be seen today. The three immortals are believed to have helped the local fishermen by controlling the tides and protecting them from the sea monsters. Sanxiantai is also known for its stunning dragon bridge, which spans across the ocean and offers a spectacular view of the coastline.
Next, we have 池上. Chishang is named after a large pond that used to be in the center of the village. The pond was surrounded by mountains, giving it a picturesque and serene atmosphere. Today, the pond has been filled in, but the name "Above the Pond" still reflects the village's tranquil setting. 池上 is popular among tourists as well, you can cycle through the rice fields which is especially beautiful when the rice are ready to harvest.
Next, let’s take a look at 知本. The name "Jhiben" comes from the Paiwan indigenous language. It means "place of the hot water," referring to the natural hot springs that are found in the area. The hot springs are known to be both relaxing and therapeutic. You can also explore the nearby scenic areas, such as Jhiben National Forest Recreation Area, which has hiking trails, waterfalls, and a suspension bridge that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
