UN Security Council urges ‘full adherence’ to Gaza ceasefire
Israel pans the statement — the first that the council managed to agree on since the conflict broke out — for lack of mention of Hamas or its rocket attacks on Israeli civilians

The United Nations Security Council on Saturday called for “full adherence to the ceasefire” that ended the 11-day conflict between Israel and Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip.
After failing several times to pass a resolution on the conflict as it unfolded, Council members “welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire beginning May 21 and recognized the important role Egypt [and] other regional countries” played in it, while stressing “the immediate need for humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilian population, particularly in Gaza.”
It also “mourned the loss of civilian lives resulting from the violence.”
“The members of the Security Council stressed the urgency of the restoration of calm in full and reiterated the importance of achieving a comprehensive peace based on the vision of a region where two democratic States, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace with secure and recognized borders,” the resolution said.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry criticized the Council for not mentioning Hamas’s firing of rockets at Israeli population centers during the fighting.
“The full responsibility for the escalation is on the Hamas terror group, which chose to open rocket fire at Israel’s capital Jerusalem, the Gaza periphery and other Israeli cities,” a ministry statement said. It accused the Security Council of “ignoring” the over 4,000 rockets fired toward Israel during the 11 days of fighting.
“We expect the international community to condemn Hamas, disarm it and ensure the rehabilitation of the Strip while preventing the flow of money and weaponry for terror,” it continued.
It also thanked the Biden administration for backing it in the Security Council, after the US blocked three previous joint statements calling to end the fighting, saying they wouldn’t help that goal. The US backed the latest statement.
Egyptian mediators held talks Saturday to firm up the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.
Saturday marked the first full day of a truce that ended the fourth Israel-Hamas war in just over a decade. In the fighting, Israel unleashed hundreds of airstrikes against terror targets in Gaza, while Hamas and other terror groups fired more than 4,300 rockets toward Israel. More than 250 people were killed, the majority of them Palestinians. Israel asserts some 200 were terror operatives.

Both Israel and Hamas have claimed victory. There was a widespread expectation that the ceasefire would stick for now, but another round of fighting at some point seems inevitable. Underlying issues remain unresolved, including the Israeli-Egyptian border blockade, now in its 14th year, that is choking Gaza’s more than 2 million residents and a refusal by the Hamas terror group to disarm (Israel says the blockade is necessary to limit access to weapons by Hamas, which is sworn to its destruction).
The fighting began May 10, when Hamas terrorists in Gaza fired long-range rockets toward Jerusalem. Palestinian terror groups have tied rocket fire from Gaza to unrest in Jerusalem connected to both prayer on the Temple Mount during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as well as the pending eviction of a number of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

The war has further sidelined Hamas’s main political rival, the internationally-backed Palestinian Authority, which oversees autonomous areas of the West Bank. Hamas has increasingly positioned itself as a defender of Jerusalem in Palestinian public opinion.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is to meet with PA President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli leaders when he visits in the coming week. Abbas is expected to raise demands that any Gaza reconstruction plans go through the Palestinian Authority to avoid strengthening Hamas.

(AHMAD GHARABLI / AFP)

Egyptian mediators hold talks to try to secure long-term Israel-Hamas truce
As ceasefire holds, officials reach out to Israel and Gaza-based terror group to firm up deal; Palestinians in the coastal enclave begin to clean up destruction

Egyptian mediators held talks Saturday to firm up an Israel-Hamas ceasefire as Palestinians in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip began to assess the damage from 11 days of intense fighting. A 130-truck convoy carrying urgently needed aid was headed to Gaza.
Gaza City’s busiest commercial area, Omar al-Mukhtar Street, was covered in debris, smashed cars, and twisted metal after a 13-floor building in its center was flattened in an Israeli airstrike. Merchandise was covered in soot and strewn inside smashed stores and on the pavement. Municipal workers removed broken glass and twisted metal from streets and sidewalks.
“We really didn’t expect this amount of damage,” said Ashour Subeih, who sells baby clothes. “We thought the strike was a bit further from us. But as you can see not an area of the shop is intact.” Having been in business for one year, Subeih estimated his losses were double what he had made so far.

On Friday, hours after the ceasefire took effect, thousands of Palestinians on the Temple Mount chanted against PA President Mahmoud Abbas and his government. “Dogs of the Palestinian Authority, out, out,” they shouted, and “The people want the president to leave.”

It was an unprecedented display of anger against Abbas. The conflict also brought to the surface deep frustration among Arbs, whether in the West Bank, Gaza, or within Israel, over the status quo, with the Israeli-Palestinian peace process all but abandoned for years.
Despite his weakened status, Abbas will be the point of contact for any renewed US diplomacy, since Israel and the West, including the United States, consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is to meet with Abbas and Israeli leaders when he visits in the coming week. Abbas is expected to raise demands that any Gaza reconstruction plans go through the Palestinian Authority to avoid strengthening Hamas.
Meanwhile, two teams of Egyptian mediators are in Israel and Gaza to continue talks on firming up a ceasefire deal — and securing a long-term calm, an Egyptian diplomat said Saturday.
The diplomat said discussions include implementing agreed-on measures in Gaza and Jerusalem, including ways to prevent practices that led to the latest fighting. The official did not elaborate. He was apparently referring to violence at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the pending eviction of Palestinian families in East Jerusalem.
The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss behind-the-scenes deliberations.
Trucks bearing aid, food and medicine arrived at Israel’s Kerem Shalom crossing with the Strip Saturday as it reopened following the conflict. Israel attempted to open the crossing during the fighting but it was attacked with mortar shells by terror groups.
Separately, Egypt said it would send a 130-truck convoy carrying humanitarian aid and medical supplies to Gaza. The convoy was expected to enter Gaza on Saturday.
The Israeli bombardment struck a blow to the already decrepit infrastructure in the small coastal territory, home to more than 2 million Palestinians. It flattened high-rises and houses, tore up roads, and wrecked water systems. At least 30 health facilities were damaged, forcing a halt to coronavirus testing in the territory. The military maintains that the targets it struck all housed assets of Hamas or other terror groups.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza says at least 243 Palestinians were killed, including 66 minors, with 1,910 people wounded. It does not differentiate between terror group members and civilians. Twelve people were killed in Israel, all but one of them civilians, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.
Israel has accused Hamas and the smaller terror groups of hiding the actual number of members killed in the war. Prime Minister Netanyahu said Friday that more than 200 terror group operatives were killed, including 25 senior commanders.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad on Saturday gave the first account of deaths within its ranks, saying that 19 of its commanders and operatives were killed, including the head of the rocket unit in northern Gaza.

Haredi party leader to Netanyahu: ‘Keep the Temple Mount closed to Jews!’
Today, 11:25 pm 0
·
The head of the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party calls on Prime Minister Netanyahu not to reopen the Temple Mount to Jewish visitors.
“Because of our sins the Temple was destroyed,” UTJ chief Moshe Gafni says in a statement.
Many Haredi Jews believe Jews should not visit the site due to its holiness.
“Not ascending to the Temple Mount is the deepest proof of our belonging to this holy place to which we direct our prayers,” Gafni says.
He adds: “I ask you to keep the Temple Mount closed to Jews!”
Jews have been barred from visiting the site, the holiest in Judaism and third holiest in Islam, since Jerusalem Day earlier this month, when authorities made the decision to shutter the Temple Mount to non-Muslims amid spiraling tensions in the city.

A view into the Temple Mount compound amid clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces, May 10, 2021 (Ahmad Gharabli / AFP)
Major clashes broke out at the site between police and Palestinian rioters later that morning, with hundreds said wounded.
Later that same day, May 10, the Gaza-ruling Hamas terror group threatened to fire rockets at Israel if it did not withdraw police from the Temple Mount and the nearby East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah — a threat it made good on when it launched projectiles at the capital and other parts of the country, setting off 11 days of fighting in the Strip that ended early Friday.
Gafni’s comments could spark disagreement within Netanyahu’s right-wing religious bloc, which includes the premier’s Likud party, ultra-Orthodox Shas, UTJ and far-right Religious Zionism. The chief of the latter, MK Bezalel Smotrich, said Thursday that Netanyahu “can forget about forming a government” if the ceasefire with Hamas contains anything related to Jerusalem. Religious Zionism members were also critical of the initial decision to close the Temple Mount.

Israel pans Security Council statement for not condemning Hamas
The Foreign Ministry criticizes the UN Security Council for not mentioning Hamas’s firing of rockets at Israeli population centers during the fighting between the Israel Defense Forces and Gaza-ruling terror group.
“The full responsibility for the escalation is on the Hamas terror group, which chose to open rocket fire at Israel’s capital Jerusalem, the Gaza periphery and other Israeli cities,” a ministry statement says.
It accuses the Security Council of “ignoring” the over 4,000 rockets fired toward Israel during the 11 days of fighting.
“Hamas used residents of the Strip as a human shield, cynically taking advantage of their despair, firing at the land crossing and preventing the entry of humanitarian aid, food, medicine and energy from Israel to the the Strip,” the ministry says.
“We expect the international community to condemn Hamas, disarm it and ensure the rehabilitation of the Strip while preventing the flow of money and weaponry for terror,” it continues. “Israel will continue to be committed to the fate of the captured and missing and will insist on their return.”
It also thanks the Biden administration for backing it in the Security Council, after the US blocked three joint statements calling to end the fighting, saying they wouldn’t help toward that goal. The US, however, backed the latest statement.

Biden: No peace until region recognizes Israel's right to exist

During a press conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-In on Friday, US President Joe Biden said there had been no shift in the Democratic Party's commitment to the security of the State of Israel, reiterating the party's long-standing support for a "two-state solution" to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
When asked about possible growing opposition within his party to its ongoing support for Israel, Biden replied that "My party still supports Israel. Let's get something straight: until the region says unequivocally they acknowledge the right of Israel to exist as an independent Jewish state, there will be no peace.

"There is no shift in my commitment to the security of Israel. No shift. Period. What we still need is a two-state solution. It is the only answer," he said.
"I made it clear when I spoke with [Palestinian Authority] President [Mahmoud] Abbas: We're going to make sure we are going to provide for security in the West Bank. We renewed the security commitment, as well as [the] economic commitment to the people in the West Bank."
He said he was committed to putting together a "major package," along with other interested nations, to rebuild in Gaza without allowing Hamas to rebuild its weapons systems.
"I also indicated to the Israelis that I thought it was very important that they stop this inter-communal fighting in Jerusalem by extremes on both sides. It has to end," Biden added.
When asked about his conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden sidestepped the question, saying that "one of the reasons why we were able to get the ceasefire in 11 days is we didn't do what other people have done."
"I don't talk about what I tell people in private. I don't talk about what we negotiate in private," adding that the 2014 conflict between Israel and Gaza, known as operation Protective Edge, lasted 56 days.

"I'M PRAYING this ceasefire will hold," Biden said, adding that he takes Netanyahu at his word. "He's never broken his word to me. What I've made clear is that it's essential that the Palestinians on the West Bank be secured and that Abbas be recognized as the leader of the Palestinian people – which he is."

"Hamas is a terrorist organization, we've recognized that," he said, saying "that doesn't mean we should not be in Gaza, rebuilding Gaza for all those innocent people who in fact have been hurt and have been collateral damage."

He is also insisting that "Israeli citizens, whether they be Arab or Jew, are treated equally" referencing the ongoing violence in east Jerusalem and saying that it "has to come to an end."

"The prime minister knows my views, but the commitment that was given was immediately kept from the very beginning. I told him what our objective was: There needed to be a ceasefire. And he, in fact, kept his commitment in the time frame in which he said he would."
He also added that senior members in his administration were in "constant contact" with their counterparts in the Israeli government, in Egypt and throughout the Middle East.
"This was not something that was just done with a casual conversation between myself and Bibi. Presumptuous of me to say this, but I think I've got a great team," the president said.
Biden also mentioned spending a "lot of time" on the phone with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, adding that "they've done a commendable job of bringing Hamas to the table and getting them to agree to a ceasefire as well."
Moon said he welcomed the ceasefire, and that "I appreciate President Biden's hard work in this regard."
Earlier on Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on the phone with Abbas and discussed measures to ensure that the ceasefire between Palestinians and Israelis holds, the State Department said.
Blinken told Abbas that the United States was committed to working with the Palestinian Authority and the United Nations to provide rapid humanitarian assistance and mobilize international support for the reconstruction of Gaza, the State Department said in a statement.

Yesh Atid to expedite legislation to curtail Netanyahu’s premiership

With the business of politics very much back on the agenda following the ceasefire with Gaza, Yesh Atid has said it will advance legislation this week to curtail Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s reign as premier.
The party stated over the weekend that this week it will seek an expedited legislative process for two bills, one limiting a prime minister to two terms in office and the other preventing an MK under indictment from forming a government.

Yesh Atid will be able to exempt the bills from the initial step of “presenting legislation” by dint of its control of the Knesset arrangements committee, headed by party MK Karin Elharar.
The chances of success for the bill stopping an MK under indictment from forming a government appear extremely thin, as it does not have the backing of Yamina or Ra’am and therefore has no majority in the Knesset.
The prime ministerial term limits bill would only come into effect in two elections, meaning that should no government be formed and new elections held in October, Netanyahu would still be able to form a coalition even if the legislation is approved during the current Knesset.
Such a bill is believed to have a slightly higher chance of approval than the bill barring MKs under indictment from forming a government, with Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope Party said to be supportive. However, securing a majority would nevertheless be tough.
“We have never halted our desire to fight corruption, and now that the fighting has stopped the time has come to deal with this,” said Elharar in announcing the advancement of these bills.

“The citizens of the State of Israel deserve clean and moral leadership which deals with the good of the public and not the preservation of power. Anyone committed to change understands that there is no other way.”

Meanwhile, negotiations for the formation of a government will resume, with Yesh Atid and its chairman Yair Lapid still seeking to oust Netanyahu, but with just 12 days left to do so.

Although Yamina leader Naftali Bennett was said to have nixed any plan to form a government backed by the Islamist Ra’am (United Arab List) Party
during the conflict in Gaza, Yamina sources are now being quoted as saying that this option might be possible again.
According to Channel 13 News, Yamina officials have said to the Likud that unless an attractive offer is made in the next few days they will back a government with the anti-Netanyahu block.
The official Yamina Party Twitter account quickly denied the report, attributing the story to “sources representing themselves,” and calling it “fake news.”
A Yamina party source told The Jerusalem Post that such speculation was “not serious.”
“At the moment Yamina isn’t there. If there was space in the public consciousness of the Yamina electorate for such a government at one point it isn’t there anymore,” although the source said that there was always a possibility that this might change as fifth elections inch closer.
Even were Bennett to return to negotiations with Yesh Atid and the “change bloc,” it is reported that the terms offered to him would be less than what they were previously.
KAN reported that Bennett would be offered the prime ministerial rotation second after Lapid, not first as was previously the case.
On Saturday night, Blue and White leader and Defense Minister MK Benny Gantz ruled out joining a government led by Netanyahu again, following speculation that he may again seek to form such a coalition.
Asked during a Channel 12 interview if “there is still a chance you will make a government with him [Netanyahu] despite everything,” Gantz replied “No.”
The Blue and White leader continued: “This has ended. I received offers in the past… Before last week there were many offers which I rejected… I have no intention to go in that direction again. The country needs something new.”

Thousands of Israelis marched in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening in a show of support for peace and coexistence between Jews and Arabs amid two long weeks of intense violent riots waging across the country.
Protesters also voiced support for the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that came into effect early Friday, calling on the government to take immediate action to end Israeli occupation in the West Bank and to reach peace with the Palestinians.
The mass march was organized by the "Standing Together" and "Breaking the Silence" movements. It left Rabin Square in Tel Aviv and made its way toward Habima Square.
Speakers included well-known Israeli novelist and left-wing activist David Grossman, author ʻAwdah Bishārāt, Joint List leader Ayman Odeh and MK Tamar Zandberg (Meretz).
"I hear politicians and security officials speak about another round of fighting in a few months or years, while being blind to the 7 million Palestinians living between the [Jordan] river and the [Mediterranean] sea," Odeh said. "There are two peoples living here and both deserve the right for self-determination."

"These past few days have shown us how life in this country can look like - a nightmare," Zandberg added. "We don't want to start waiting for the next war, but to change direction toward peace - to live together in true partnership."

A similar protest took place last Saturday at Habima Square, which was one of several protests attended by Jews and Arabs across the country that called for peace and for coexistence amid the nationwide riots and the
military operation in Gaza
.
Jews and Arabs gathered daily during Operation Guardians of the Walls on bridges and intersections along the country and protested against the ongoing violence.
Also on Saturday, hundreds gathered outside the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem, calling on Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu to resign and blaming him for the escalation in Gaza and claiming that he deliberately extended the operation for no reason but personal interest.
Earlier Saturday, about 200 people marched along the streets of the mixed city of Jaffa, voicing support for coexistence between Arabs and Jews while visiting small local businesses.
